Create Your 2009 New Year’s Resolution Today

Posted by Shawn on November 10, 2008

It’s that time of year again. Soon 2008 will be history and we will embark on a new year with the chance to start over again.

You are likely one of the 120 million people in the world who make a New Year’s Resolution each and every year. Most of the time it involves losing weight or getting in better shape, but it may also include to make more money, make peace with your mother-in-law, or go back to school to finally get that degree. You, like the millions of others, pick January 1st as the day to start this resolution, pledging that this year you will finally make it. But, you will be disappointed by the second week when getting up at 5AM to go workout at a packed fitness club doesn’t seem that important anymore.

New Year’s Resolutions are usually made between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when it is easy to relax and believe that it will be a piece of cake (OK, poor choice of words) to give up sweets for 2009. When you relaxing by the fire it is easy to decide that you will run 2 miles every day, starting with the new year. Unless you are the exception to the rule, you have most likely failed in the past and are positioned to do so again.

The trick to be successful in 2009?

It’s simple:  “START TODAY!”

Write down what you want to accomplish for 2009; fitness goals, lose weight, finish school, clean out the garage. Then start working on these goals today. If your goal is to start using the health club you belong to start going now. You will quickly become a regular so when 2009 rolls around you won’t feel like a new kid in the club. If you want to lose weight start your program now. It is never going to get easier by waiting, but once you start and get committed it will become easier and easier. Want to connect to an old friend or make peace with someone? Take the first step today. With determination and a little bit of luck you may very likely have the issue resolved prior to the end of 2008. Think of how great that will feel!

So, rather than waiting until 11PM on Dec 31st, start drafting your resolutions for 2009 today, and start working on them. One Jan 1st, 2009 when everyone is trying to get out of the starting blocks you will be heading to the finish line at full speed, with an excellent chance of hitting your goal early while still in full stride.
